Knee Osteoarthritis

Don’t let knee pain slow your next step.

Common condition caused by the gradual wear and tear of the cartilage in the knee joint. As the protective cartilage breaks down over time, the bones may rub against each other, leading to pain, stiffness, swelling, and difficulty with movement. Symptoms often worsen with activity, prolonged standing, or aging, and may include a grinding sensation, reduced flexibility, or instability in the knee.

KNEEMBO: Knee Embolization Through the Foot

Dr. Rishi R. Sood developed KNEEMBO, his streamlined approach to genicular artery embolization performed through a small artery near the foot or ankle.

Genicular artery embolization is a minimally invasive treatment for pain associated with knee osteoarthritis. Using live imaging and a tiny catheter, Dr. Sood selectively reduces abnormal blood flow associated with inflammation inside the knee—without joint surgery or a groin incision.

Because the arterial entry point is close to the knee, the catheter remains below the diaphragm and avoids a longer path through the chest and abdomen. In Dr. Sood’s practice, this highly targeted approach has enabled the use of very small amounts of iodinated contrast and low radiation doses.

The technical portion of KNEEMBO typically takes Dr. Sood less than 10 minutes to perform, although individual procedure times may vary depending on anatomy and treatment complexity. Patients generally walk into the procedure room, undergo treatment through a tiny pedal access site, and walk out afterward. Following a brief period of observation, they return home the same day.

Since 2023, Dr. Sood has personally treated more than 2,000 knees with GAE and performed more than 2,200 transpedal endovascular procedures.

Advantages of the KNEEMBO Approach

  • Typically performed in less than 10 minutes
  • No groin incision or arterial puncture
  • Very low contrast utilization
  • Low radiation exposure
  • Immediate walking after treatment
  • Brief outpatient recovery
  • No joint replacement or surgical removal of tissue

KNEEMBO combines extensive procedural experience with an efficient, patient-centered approach to knee embolization. Every patient is evaluated individually to determine whether GAE is appropriate
