Dr. Rishi R. Sood, M.D.
Dr. Rishi R. Sood is a vascular and interventional radiologist specializing in minimally invasive, image-guided treatments. He provides outpatient, nonsurgical care for uterine fibroids, knee and leg pain, varicose veins, blocked fallopian tubes, symptomatic hemorrhoids, enlarged prostates, peripheral arterial disease, and selected cancers and tumors.
Dr. Sood has extensive experience performing procedures through arteries near the foot and ankle. Since 2023, he has personally treated more than 2,000 knees with genicular artery embolization and performed more than 2,200 transpedal endovascular procedures.
Dr. Sood calls his streamlined pedal-access approach to genicular artery embolization KNEEMBO. In his practice, the technical portion typically takes less than 10 minutes. The targeted protocol is designed to minimize iodinated contrast use and radiation exposure. Patients generally walk into the procedure room, undergo treatment through a tiny access site near the ankle, and walk out afterward.
Dr. Sood also introduced Pedal HEMBRO, a novel approach to hemorrhoidal artery embolization performed through a distal tibial artery. His initial case treated recurrent hemorrhoidal bleeding after three previous rubber-band ligation procedures using only 22 mL of contrast. The patient walked immediately afterward and returned home following a brief recovery. Based on a review of the indexed medical literature, this is believed to represent the first known transpedal hemorrhoidal artery embolization.
Many of Dr. Sood’s procedures are performed in a state-of-the-art office-based interventional suite he developed from the ground up, allowing patients to receive specialized care in a comfortable outpatient environment without the complexity of a traditional hospital or surgery center.
A native of Washington, D.C., Dr. Sood proudly serves patients at convenient locations in Maryland and Washington, D.C. He is committed to providing every patient with attentive, personalized care and an individualized treatment plan.
Outside of his practice, Dr. Sood lives with his loving wife, who is also a practicing physician, and their dog, Boomer. Their shared dedication to medicine gives him a deeply personal appreciation for compassionate care and the trust patients place in their physicians.
Procedure times, contrast utilization, radiation exposure, recovery, and clinical outcomes vary according to each patient’s anatomy and medical condition.
