Frozen shoulder, also known as adhesive capsulitis, is a condition that causes pain, stiffness, and reduced movement in the shoulder joint. Symptoms usually develop gradually and may worsen over time, making daily activities such as reaching or lifting difficult.

SHEEMBO: Minimally Invasive Shoulder Embolization
Dr. Rishi R. Sood offers SHEEMBO, a minimally invasive, image-guided treatment for selected patients with persistent shoulder pain.
Shoulder pain from conditions such as adhesive capsulitis—commonly called frozen shoulder—and certain rotator-cuff–related inflammatory conditions may be associated with abnormal small blood vessels surrounding the painful tissues. SHEEMBO uses a tiny catheter to selectively reduce this abnormal blood flow, with the goal of decreasing inflammation, relieving pain, and improving shoulder movement.
The procedure is performed through a small arterial access site without an incision in the shoulder, surgical tissue removal, or joint replacement. Patients receive treatment in Dr. Sood’s outpatient interventional suite and generally return home after a brief recovery.
Potential Advantages of SHEEMBO
- No surgical incision in the shoulder
- No removal of bone, tendon, or joint tissue
- Minimally invasive arterial access
- Outpatient treatment
- Brief post-procedure recovery
- Preserves the natural shoulder anatomy
- Potential option when medications, physical therapy, or injections have not provided sufficient relief
SHEEMBO is an emerging treatment and is not appropriate for every cause of shoulder pain. Dr. Sood evaluates each patient individually and reviews the patient’s symptoms, physical examination, and imaging to determine whether shoulder embolization may be appropriate.
Individual results vary. SHEEMBO is not a replacement for surgery when structural shoulder damage requires operative treatment.
